Umbraco MCP Setup

AI + Umbraco

Your CMS can now take instructions in plain English

Umbraco shipped something this year that changes how we build and maintain your site. It is called an MCP server. In plain terms, it lets an AI assistant work directly inside Umbraco, the same way one of our developers would.

We have been testing it for months. Here is what it does, what it means for your site, and how we keep it from doing anything you did not ask for.

What actually changed

Until now, every change to your site meant a person clicking through the backoffice. Now we can describe the outcome we want and the assistant carries it out through Umbraco's own management layer.

It is not a plugin, and it does not change how your site works. Think of it as a controlled door into the same tools your team already uses.

What it means for your site

  • Get campaigns and appeals live faster. A full set of pages built in a working session instead of days.
  • Push site-wide changes in one pass. A new banner, an updated call to action, revised legal language, applied everywhere at once.
  • Build new page types without a long development cycle.
  • Clean up stale pages and unused media at scale, without the manual slog.
  • Show up when people ask AI tools for help, because we can apply the right structure and metadata across the whole site.

How we keep it safe

This is the part that matters. The tool is powerful enough to break things, so we scope it down hard.

  • We run it on a staging copy of your site, never the live one.
  • It logs in as a limited account. It can only touch what we allow.
  • We turn on only the tools a task needs, not all of them. Fewer tools, fewer surprises.
  • Every change is reviewed and published by a person. The AI drafts. We ship.

On at launch

  • Content editing
  • Media management

Off until a task needs it

  • Deleting content
  • User and supporter data
  • Site configuration

Questions we get

What is the Umbraco MCP server?

It's a secure bridge that lets an AI assistant work directly inside Umbraco through the CMS's own management layer. You describe the change you want, and the assistant carries it out, the same way a developer would in the backoffice.

Is it safe to let AI make changes to my Umbraco site?

Yes, when it's scoped correctly. We run it on a staging copy of your site, log it in as a permission-limited account, and turn on only the tools a task needs. Every change is reviewed and published by a person.

What can AI actually do inside Umbraco?

It can create and edit content, manage media, build new page types, apply site-wide changes in one pass, and clean up stale pages and unused media. In practice it handles the repetitive work that used to be done page by page.

Will AI edit my live website automatically?

No. We run it against a staging environment, and a person reviews and publishes every change. The AI drafts the work. People decide what goes live.

Does the MCP server change how my Umbraco site works?

No. It isn't a plugin and it doesn't alter your site. It connects to the same management tools your team already uses, so nothing about your setup has to change.

AI can do real work inside your CMS now. The value is real and so is the risk. We keep the value and design out the risk. That is the whole job.
